James D Collier, Sr. founded JAS. D. COLLIER & CO. in 1911.  He adopted the logo “Just Insurance” on a seal referring to the firm’s commitment to provide equal and fair treatment to all customers while providing the best and most cost-effective insurance coverage available.

The second generation, Jim and John Collier were brothers who grew the business to become one of the largest insurance agencies in the Mid-South.  The Collier brothers took the “Just Insurance” logo to heart by not only treating customers with fairness and equality, but by giving and volunteering in many worthwhile civic organizations.  The sixties were a difficult time in Memphis especially after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King.  During this time, the first African American city councilman, Fred Davis, approached Jim and John about getting started as an insurance agent.  At the time, this was an impossible request, but the Collier brothers arranged a meeting with their largest insurance carrier, Hartford.  Hartford agreed to consider Fred, but they required that he undergo extensive training and they asked who would train Fred.  Jim and John answered immediately, we will personally train him.  Fred Davis became one of the first African American insurance agencies in the United States, and he always testified in public for his gratitude to the Collier brothers for their help

The third generation of Collier Insurance began when John’s son, Stuart Collier, joined Jim and John in 1978 and 15 years later when Jim’s son Dabney and daughter Christina joined the firm.  Stuart and Dabney have continued the tradition of socially conscience volunteerism and equality and fairness to all clients.  The firm has grown to become a regional insurance broker with national reach.  Growth has been all organic with the exception of one acquisition in 1985 of Craddock Insurance.

The fourth generation of Collier Insurance began when Stuart’s son, John Collier, joined the firm in 2008.  Dabney’s nephew, Preston Roberts, joined the firm in 2019 and Stuart’s other son, Sam Collier joined the firm in 2020.  Dabney and Stuart are leading Collier Insurance today by prioritizing the importance of a positive sales culture.  The Colliers have committed the organization to strategic planning using the best advice and data from peer sharing organizations.
